Descrizione dell'iniziativa

We are offering a Workshop in collaboration with POLI.design, a consortium company associated with the Politecnico di Milano. Together with the Politecnico's School of Design and the Department of Design, POLI.design forms part of the Politecnico di Milano's Design System, acting as a bridge between the university, companies, institutions, and professional worlds.

As part of its activities, POLI.design has signed an agreement with the National Packaging Consortium (CONAI), which has been engaged in packaging waste recovery for over 25 years, to offer a workshop aimed at designing recycling bin systems for the Milan-Cortina 2026 Olympics.

Registrations are open, with priority given to graduate students and those from Product Design, Integrated Product Design, and Design & Engineering. Students from other programs (such as Interior and Communication Design) may also apply, provided they have product design skills.

The product concepts must meet the technical and functional requirements for waste sorting containers suited to large events, as well as public spaces in general. They should address the needs of both users—Olympics visitors, staff, athletes, and waste collection personnel—and adapt to various contexts (outdoor settings like sun, rain, or snow, as well as indoor settings such as offices and other spaces). Additionally, the design should communicate both the values and image of the Olympics, as well as the sustainability values promoted by CONAI.

Beyond their practical use, the bins should become symbols and lasting icons of these values. They should be reusable after the event in other contexts, such as schools, public offices, or other events. During the workshop, students will receive the project brief and learn the outcomes of an initial research phase to illustrate the context and early insights to stimulate the design process.

POLI.design has already expressed interest in acquiring the intellectual property rights of the projects developed during the Workshop. Therefore, participants will be required to sign the Declaration of Recognition of Intellectual Property Rights/Assignment of Copyright attached. Authors of the selected projects will be awarded a financial prize in accordance with the Politecnico's industrial property regulations.

Additionally, there will be a further development phase for the most promising projects, which will be managed directly by POLI.design and/or CONAI with the students for industrial production of the product.
